Karol Pichler

This year’s edition of BADW Masters will present Karol Pichler, a designer, an intermedia artist, a textile painter, a teacher, who will premier his new collection of screens. A screen as a specific feature of furniture and space, a hiding for intimacy, a space-dividing element, a solitaire for solitaires. Pichler gave them a reduced, even Cartesian form. He works with them as if they were an object (of desire), a sculpture. It is both his ego and a dialogue with space.

Karol Pichler (1957) is a specific and bold personality of the Slovak artistic and designer scene. He’s been active since the 1980s when he entered the stage with a well-defined artistic programme. His art is characteristic of the overlapping of forms, media, materials and approaches. Provocation together with a permanent visual play with an object, space, a material, a context and media are also vital for his work. As a globetrotter, a cosmopolite, he can naturally integrate the knowledge gained during his travels along with the knowledge from history, past and contemporary art, architecture, food, fashion or performative arts. An important part of his work are the essentials such as in-depth knowledge of historical textile techniques. That gives him an advantage, putting him in his artistic plays, not only with textile, ahead of the game. Both geometrical abstraction and a lavish baroque form are close to him. He is both modern and postmodern. He is both meta and a moment.
