Stools Combo were designed by Zuzana Tončíková and Eva Haviarová within the project "Integration of eco-design rules into the educational process of designers", supported by the J. W. Fulbrihgt Commission. The project took place at Purdue University in the USA. This design study shows the differences in the environmental impacts of the basic materials used in furniture production. The big challenge for us as designers was to understand how the environmental impact of the different parts of a product can be affected depending on the right combination of product shape, material and manufacturing technology. The project methods consisted of comparing three nearly identical stools that were designed by combining different materials and technologies. The outputs of the project should help designers to integrate eco-design practices into the creative thinking process, as well as to quantify the environmental impacts of the basic materials used in the furniture industry.
