The diploma thesis draws inspiration from the elements of totemism, which it transfers into the space of contemporary interior through the totem symbol. The concept of the totem is associated with clans and has immense significance in totemic cultures. The totem is seen as an object of a certain piety, an expression of reverence or respect. One way of depicting a totem is as a tall object in the form of a monumental vertical. The totem placed in a residential interior is based on the desire to show the connections between the relationships in the original totemic cultures and the relationships of the members in today's family or household. The need to approach and show the importance of human relationships with their surroundings is deliberately demonstrated through the beetles, whose presence in the interior often gives people an irrational fear of their presence.

The object seeks to create human interaction in its use and the possibility of moving it freely according to the current needs of the household inhabitants. Its shape tends to create a monumental impression in the space, even to the point of evoking an impression of spirituality that reminds the household members of an idea based on totemism. The image of the beetle appearing in the design is a metaphor not only for the human relationship to the insects indoors, but also for human behaviour towards their surroundings in general. As a consequence of human activity, the Earth's natural environment is becoming increasingly scarcer, and reminders of this phenomenon are increasingly necessary. The deliberate enlargement of the beetle in the form of a totem symbolically enlarges it to the level of a human being and thus introduces a degree of paradox into the design. The choice of materials and the artistic treatment of the design draws on totemism and the prominent features of beetles. MIMETISM The design took into account the properties of the material used, the surface of which became the boundary in the creation of the graphic representation of the beetle. By deliberately layering different degrees of transparency and colour shades of DICHROIC FILM into the shape of a cylinder, a seemingly simple object was created, which surprises the user with the depiction of the beetle as a totem only after it is lit up. Just as organisms often protect themselves from potential threats by mimicking their environment, the image of the beetle on the totem is not visible, appearing only after it is lit. In the off state, we perceive the surface of the foil with a mirror effect that produces specific reflections.

The reflection of the observer himself is thus confronted with the image of the beetle, which appears on the totem after lighting. DIVERSITY In addition to the diversity of functions as an interior object, the totem is also visually diverse during use. The different parts contain different graphic representations of the beetle's body, which can be easily rotated to create new combinations. Together with the changing colour of the dichroic foil according to the viewing angle, they thus create many possible variations. BIOLUMINISCENCE The distinctive ability of some beetles to bioluminesce is met in the design with the symbol of totemism. The moment when the totem beetle lights up tends to create a monumental impression in the space, even to the point of evoking a sense of spirituality that reminds members of the household of the idea of totemism.
